Gas turbine filters clean combustion air at the intake, capturing dust, moisture and corrosive salt before they reach the turbine. Conical and cylindrical cartridges are commonly paired.
They serve power stations, cogeneration plants, refineries and natural gas compressor stations. Dirty air erodes and fouls compressor blades, reducing power and risking unplanned shutdowns. Coastal, dusty or humid conditions change media requirements. FLTS manufactures to turbine type, filter-house dimensions and site environment.
- Conical and cylindrical cartridge design
- Moisture-resistant synthetic or cellulose media
- EPDM gasket and robust metal support
- Replacement manufacturing from part numbers or dimensions
The Role of Gas Turbine Filters in Air Intake Systems
A gas turbine filter fits the turbine intake filter house and filters combustion air. An operating turbine draws a very large volume of air continuously. Without filtration, dust, moisture, salt and other particles enter the compressor directly.
Turbine intake filters have three main functions:
- Preventing erosion: Dust particles strike and wear compressor blade surfaces.
- Reducing fouling: Fine dust and oily deposits reduce compressor efficiency, requiring more fuel for the same output.
- Limiting corrosion: Salt-laden coastal moisture causes corrosion in the hot section.
Intake efficiency losses increase fuel consumption and reduce power output. Correctly selected filters replaced on time reduce the risk of unplanned shutdowns.
How Does a Gas Turbine Intake Filter Work?
Air enters through filter-house hoods or louvres. Some systems first use a prefilter to capture coarse particles and droplets. Air then passes from outside to inside through cartridges mounted horizontally on the filter wall. Dust stays outside; clean air flows through the duct to the turbine intake.
Pulse-Cleaned Systems
In dusty, arid locations, short compressed-air pulses enter the cartridges and dislodge surface dust, extending service life. Conical cartridges help the released dust slide away.
Static Systems
Without pulse cleaning, cartridges retain dust until intake pressure drop reaches the replacement limit. Prefiltration is particularly important for extending cartridge life in these systems.
Gas Turbine Filter Types
Conical and Cylindrical Cartridge Pairs
A common arrangement mounts a cylindrical cartridge on the filter wall and a conical cartridge filter end-to-end in front of it. The pair operates as one element, providing more filtration area in the same mounting position.
Single Cylindrical Cartridge
Some filter houses use only cylindrical cartridges. Dimensions and connection type depend on the filter-house manufacturer. See the cartridge filter page for other cylindrical types.
Prefilters
Prefilters ahead of the cartridges capture coarse dust, insects, leaves and water droplets, reducing the load on the cartridges.
Selecting Gas Turbine Filter Media
Choose media for the turbine’s environment. Coastal, desert and urban installations require different media.
- Synthetic media: Moisture-resistant and non-absorbent, preferred for coastal, rainy and foggy conditions.
- Cellulose media: An economical option for dry, temperate conditions. It can absorb water and raise pressure drop in humid air.
- Surface-treated media: Retains fine dust on the surface and releases it readily during pulse cleaning in dusty locations.
Gas Turbine Filter Specifications
Dimensions depend on the turbine and filter-house manufacturers. The following table lists ordering details.
| Feature | Options | Selection basis |
|---|---|---|
| Filter type | Conical/cylindrical pair or single cylindrical cartridge | Filter-house design |
| Application | Gas turbine air intakes, industrial compressors | Facility |
| Filter medium | Moisture-resistant synthetic media or cellulose | Coastal, dusty or humid environment |
| Sealing | EPDM gasket | Filter-wall seating surface |
| Support structure | Internal and external metal cages | Airflow, vibration and cleaning pulses |
| Cleaning | Pulse-cleaned or static | Intake system type |
| Installation | Horizontal on the filter wall; sized for the existing filter house | Filter-house manufacturer |
What to Check When Selecting a Gas Turbine Filter
- Environment: Coastal, desert, industrial or urban conditions determine media and prefiltration needs.
- Cleaning type: The support structure must withstand repeated pulses in pulse-cleaned systems.
- Pressure drop: Intake pressure drop affects turbine output. Provide adequate filtration area without unnecessary media resistance.
- Dimensions and gasket fit: Even a small gap between filter and wall allows unfiltered air into the turbine.
- Maintenance plan: Replacement during planned shutdowns affects stock and delivery planning.
Replacement Gas Turbine Filter Manufacturing
FLTS manufactures replacement filters from existing part numbers or dimensions. Metal cages and sealing gaskets help cartridges maintain their form under high airflow, humidity changes and vibration.
The arrangement is selected for the turbine type, special dimensions and operating environment. For other cartridge types, see the filter cartridges category.
Replacement and Maintenance
- Continuously monitor intake differential pressure and plan replacement as it approaches the limit.
- Before entering the filter house, ensure the turbine is stopped and the intake is isolated.
- Replace conical and cylindrical cartridges as a pair.
- Clean filter-wall seating surfaces and check that gaskets seat fully.
- After replacement, check the clean side for dust traces or foreign material.
- In pulse-cleaned systems, check that compressed air is dry and valves operate correctly.
What Determines Gas Turbine Filter Prices?
- Filter type: conical/cylindrical set or single cartridge.
- Media type and any surface treatment.
- Cartridge dimensions and filtration area.
- Support cage and end-cap material.
- Number of sets and prefilter requirements.
Provide turbine details, existing part numbers and the number of sets for a confirmed quote.
|---|---|---|
| Elektrik üretim santralleri | Gaz türbininin emiş havasını süzer | Sürekli çalışma; değişimin bakım duruşuna denk getirilmesi |
| Kojenerasyon ve trijenerasyon | Fabrika içi enerji üreten türbini korur | Tesis içi tozun ve bacadan gelen kirliliğin etkisi |
| Rafineri ve petrokimya | Türbin tahrikli kompresörlerin girişini korur | Havadaki hidrokarbon buharı |
| Doğal gaz boru hattı istasyonları | Kompresör türbininin emişini süzer | Uzak sahada az bakım, dayanıklı yapı |
| Kıyı bölgesindeki tesisler | Tuzlu nemi ve ince tozu tutar | Nem dirençli sentetik medya, sağlam conta |
| Tozlu ve kurak bölgeler | Yoğun toz yükünü tutar | Darbeli temizlemeye uygun kartuş |

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a gas turbine filter do?
It captures dust, moisture and salt in combustion intake air, protecting compressor blades from erosion and fouling and preserving efficiency.
Why are conical and cylindrical cartridges used together?
Mounted end-to-end, they provide more filtration area at one mounting point. The conical shape also helps dust release during pulse cleaning.
Which filter suits a coastal power plant?
Non-absorbent synthetic media are preferred where salt-laden moisture is present. Final selection requires turbine and site details.
When should a gas turbine filter be replaced?
Plan replacement by intake pressure drop. There is no fixed interval: environmental dust load and cleaning system determine service life.
What information is needed for a replacement filter?
Provide the existing part number or dimensions, turbine make and model, and site environment.
Are these filters also used in compressors?
Yes. The same intake cartridge types are used in industrial and turbine-driven compressor intakes.
