The name comes from the abbreviation of the European Union directive, and the same principles are in force in Türkiye.

A common mistake in the market is to treat any fan with an explosion-protected motor as an ATEX fan. The certification covers the entire fan, meaning the impeller, housing, shaft, bearings and motor are assessed as a whole. A unit with a suitable motor but a standard impeller falls outside this scope. This technical file is also the first document requested during an inspection.

How Does an ATEX Fan Work?

In terms of moving air, the operating logic is no different from a standard fan. The impeller rotates and air is moved by centrifugal or axial force. The difference is that every source that could lead to ignition is eliminated by design.

There are three sources of risk. The first is friction sparks caused by the rotating impeller contacting the housing, the second is temperature rise caused by dust accumulating on surfaces, and the third is static electricity. In explosion proof fan design, a calculated clearance is left between the impeller and the housing, all metal parts are grounded and the surface temperature is kept below the ignition temperature of the surrounding atmosphere.

What Are the Features of ATEX Fans?

ATEX fan features consist of technical decisions reflected in the certification. Each one is determined according to the zone classification.

Blade to housing clearance: the minimum distance needed to prevent friction sparks is maintained

Material selection: spark-producing pairs such as aluminum and steel are not used together

Grounding: the housing, impeller and ductwork are bonded together conductively

Surface temperature limit: set according to the ignition temperature of the dust present

Antistatic belt: prevents static charge build-up on belt-driven models

Bearing temperature monitoring: an overheating bearing is an ignition source in its own right

Certificate and marking: the category and temperature class remain legible on the unit

The relevant design standard defines the clearance between impeller and housing as a ratio linked to the impeller diameter and does not allow it to fall below a minimum limit. This clearance slightly reduces fan efficiency, but in return it eliminates the risk of contact.

ATEX Fan Types

Types differ by both zone category and housing design. The zone classification determines which category is required.

Zone

Atmosphere

Duration of Explosive Atmosphere

Required Category

Zone 20

Combustible dust

Continuously or for long periods

1D

Zone 21

Combustible dust

Occasionally in normal operation

2D

Zone 22

Combustible dust

Rarely and for short periods

3D

Zone 1

Gas and vapor

Occasionally in normal operation

2G

Zone 2

Gas and vapor

Rarely and for short periods

3G

By housing design, the classification is the same as for standard fan groups. Straight-bladed radial types are used on dust-carrying lines, axial types for area ventilation and spiral-housing scroll fan designs on mixed lines. The zone category does not change which housing is chosen; it only determines how that housing is built.

ATEX Explosion Proof Fans

The ATEX explosion proof fan is the type built for lines where both the internal and the external atmosphere are classified. The air-handling side of the fan and the motor side are certified separately.

In dust extraction lines, the inside is usually classified as Zone 21 or Zone 22, while the outside is considered unclassified. When ordering an ATEX explosion proof fan, these two values must be stated separately; otherwise the unit is built to a higher category than necessary and the cost rises needlessly.

Explosion Proof Radial Fans

Because the explosion proof radial fan runs with a straight-bladed impeller, it does not accumulate dust and prevents surface temperature rise from the outset. This group is the first choice for lines carrying combustible dust.

For materials such as wood dust, starch, sugar dust and aluminum dust, the absence of build-up on the impeller is decisive. The difference from a standard radial fan is not the blade geometry but the discipline applied to clearance, materials and grounding.

Explosion Proof Axial Fans

The explosion proof axial fan moves high airflow at low pressure, so it is used for area ventilation and gas dilution. It is preferred when the duct run is short.

Paint booths, battery charging rooms, chemical stores and areas where solvents are used are the domain of this group. An explosion proof axial fan is insufficient on its own on dusty lines, because its blade design cannot handle filter resistance.

ATEX Fan Applications

If a facility contains combustible dust or vapor, a hazardous area classification must already be in place. Fan selection is an output of this map, because two sections of the same facility may require different categories.

Woodworking: sanding dust and sawdust ignite with low energy

Food production: flour, starch, sugar and milk powder are classed as explosive dusts

Metalworking: aluminum and magnesium dust are in the high-risk group

Chemicals and pharmaceuticals: solvent vapor and dust are present together

Feed and grain: dust concentration is high in silo and screening lines

Paint and coating: solvent vapor forms in spray booths

Recycling: plastic and paper dust collects at shredder outlets

On these lines, the fan alone is not a sufficient safeguard. Jet Pulse Bag Filter units are fitted with an explosion vent panel and a non-return explosion isolation flap, while on lines carrying coarse particles a pre-separator cyclone is installed upstream.

Motor and Protection Class in ATEX Fans

Motor selection depends on the zone category and on whether the atmosphere is dusty or gaseous. In dusty atmospheres, dust ignition protection by enclosure is the norm, while in gaseous atmospheres the flameproof enclosure comes to the fore. On lines where both atmospheres are present, the more demanding condition is taken as the basis.

Three pieces of information are read together on an explosion proof fan motor. The category shows which zone the motor is suitable for, the temperature class shows the maximum temperature its surface can reach, and the degree of protection (IP rating) shows its resistance to dust and water ingress. In dusty zones, a motor with a low IP rating becomes a risk despite its certification. For motors driven by a frequency inverter, it must also be confirmed that this use is covered by the certification.

ATEX Fan Manufacturing and Design

Manufacturing does not begin without the facility’s hazardous area classification report. If there is no report, the ignition temperature and minimum ignition energy of the dust are first determined in the laboratory.

At the design stage, impeller material, clearance value, grounding points and bearing monitoring method are decided together. After production, the impeller is dynamically balanced, because an unbalanced impeller can deflect over time enough to touch the housing. During installation, conductive gaskets and flexible connectors are used at the duct connections. The unit is delivered with a label showing its category and temperature class, together with its technical file.

ATEX Fan Prices

ATEX fan prices vary significantly with the zone category. At the same airflow, the difference between a unit built for Zone 22 and one built for Zone 21 stems from the certification burden alone. That is why requesting a higher category than necessary translates directly into cost.

The cost items that make up the price are category, temperature class, housing material, motor protection type and scope of certification. When comparing quotes, ask whether the certification covers the whole fan or only the motor, because most of the difference between two quotes lies here. When you fill out our quote request form with your facility’s zone information and airflow values, we prepare a price specific to your project.

ATEX Fan Maintenance and Inspection

Maintenance is part of keeping the certification valid. Replacing parts without the manufacturer’s approval voids conformity. A unit fitted with a non-original impeller or a motor of a different class is no longer considered within scope.

Impeller to housing clearance: measured every six months and recorded

Grounding resistance: checked with a measuring instrument over the same period

Bearing temperature: monitored continuously, with an alarm at the threshold value

Vibration level: the earliest sign of contact risk

Impeller surface: visually inspected for dust build-up at the end of every shift

Label legibility: category and temperature class must not be worn off

Spare parts log: the certificate of every replaced part is kept on file

If bearing temperature and vibration rise together, the unit is shut down without delay. When the label on an ATEX fan becomes illegible, it must be renewed; otherwise a nonconformity is recorded during inspection.

An ATEX fan is a fan designed and certified so that it cannot become an ignition source in areas where flammable dust or gas is present.
